The work that's going to Deerfield Academy for the Exquisite Corpse show. Inspired by ceramic Staffordshire dogs seen in my travels. In a fishing village in Denmark they can be seen in almost every window. Turned out they mean 'Daddy's at sea.' Turned in, it's 'Daddy's home.'

A five person show at Deerfield Academy, Deerfield, MA

Exquisite Corpse will be on view at the Russell Gallery at the Memorial Building of Deerfield Academy from September 22 through November 17. There will be an opening reception at the gallery from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 2.

The show will run the gamut from realism to minimalism. Sally Curcio, a Northampton artist who works in a wide variety of experimental media, will be exhibiting conceptual paintings. Amherst artist Rachel Folsom’s contributions will include an assortment of oddly shaped panels and funny self-portraits. Ashfield artist, Jane Lund, known for her highly realized, large portraits and still life paintings in pastel, will be showing small watercolors, that she calls her recreational paintings. Betsy Stone of Florence will show her anthropomorphic still life pastel paintings of gourds. And Ellen Wineberg of Watertown will be displaying large, whimsical oil-stick paintings of Staffordshire dogs and teddy bears.

The title of the show, Exquisite Corpse, reflects the artists’ wide differences in style. The original Exquisite Corpse was a collaborative game of folded paper played by the Surrealist writers and painters in Paris in the 1920’s where each player writes or draws in turn without being able to see the preceding contribution. When the paper is unfolded a surprising result is revealed. The famous first example of this result was “The- Exquisite- Corpse- Shall- Drink- The- Young -Wine.”

I will be showing 2 paintings with found red-work embroidery and one assemblage called "Folk Artist.

On a trip through Scandinavia with an alumni group from the University of Washington, Seattle with professor Terje Leiren (pictured, Terje Leiren@blogspot.com.)

An opportunity to travel through a spectacular landscape of fjords, glaciers, lakes, waterfalls and mountains.

Seen at the Art and Design Museum in Bergen

a show about taste and the marketplace. Contemporary
jewelry, sculpture and textile pieces made from ephemeral and unconventional materials like rubber and concrete were shown with ancient works from the collection such as fine ceramics and silver. A telling essay on the wall, for a museum show, about the influence of the marketplace on taste and the origins of taste-making and the interconnectedness of the market with the museum world. On the way in, at the top of a marble staircase, there was a classic figurative stained glass window, but wait, it had a red neon shape superimposed on it. Huh? It looked familiar, I stared for awhile, a star with a tail? No, a baby with a crown? OH I GET IT the Simpson's baby, Maggie. I couldn't find the artist's name or a card anywhere, and I can't read Norwegian but I thought it was terrific; a classic assumption piece with a contemporary baby, both powerful symbols in their time.
This was a brave show for a museum to host. The questions of what is art, what is beauty and who decides were answered, sort of.

She also does drawings on graph paper that look like weavings.

Going to the dogs in Northampton

Too smart. Too cute. Loaded with attitude. And don’t ask me to give you my paw. The answer is no.

Artist Jane Lund has put together a show of paintings, photography, and sculpture called Animals in Art: An Invitational Exhibition at the Northampton Center for the Arts. The show’s intention is to celebrate our furry (and not so furry) animal friends.

If my dog Lady chose to read this blog, she would insist that an unlimited supply of food treats and praise be provided to all the animals depicted in the show.

Apparently there are more than fifty artists in the show including Pam Barlett, Rachel Folsom, Stephanie Gerilamatos, Amy Johnquest, Robert Markey, Ali Osborn, Betsy Stone, Gregory Thorp, Tom Ulrich, and Frank Ward (and one of our past Sculpture/Installation Fellows, Ariel Kotker, contributed a lambscape). The exhibition runs from December 10 through December 31, 2009. The opening reception will take place this coming Friday, December 11th from 5-8pm and will include a performance by West County Jazz. Northampton Center for the Arts 17 New South Street, Northampton, MA Hours: Tues-Fri, 11am-4pm Closed on Christmas, but open on New Year’s Eve until midnight.

Ellen Wineberg is in a group show called "Still Lifes" at the prestigious Gallery Henoch in the super-trendy Chelsea area of NYC . This past Saturday was the opening party and I was lucky enough to attend. Ellen's work is fabulous! Colorful, warm and witty like the artist. She is in very good company, too, with painters such as Steve Smulka, Janet Rickus, and Robert Jackson.
